Bernie

You probably already know this, but Bernie is my special little guy. The classic puppy in the window, love at first site, man’s best friend.

We met in Taipei back in March 2016. Walking home from work late one night, I glanced at the pet store next to Tong Hua Nightmarket. All the puppies were sleeping. Except for one.

At Georgetown I developed an affinity for English Bulldogs, so I was drawn to him. What happened next was surreal. I waved my hand and said “Hello!” He lifted his paw, large for his puppy body, and chirped back a little puppy bark.

The next day he was mine. And every day since then, with remarkably few exceptions, he’s been by my side. At the office he’s always had a chair next to mine. On trips he’s my copilot in the passenger seat. If we met in the past 8 years, you know Bernie already.

English Bulldogs are among the most loving, loyal, and hilarious dog breeds on the planet. Bernie ranks #1 in each category. However, like many other English Bulldogs, Bernie suffers from a rare medical condition. And as he ages, his cost of care will inevitably rise.
